deCordova Museum

Two Big Black Hearts, 1985,
bronze, by artist Jim Dine
The deCordova Museum, located in Lincoln, Massachusetts, is absolutely enchanting. It is the largest sculpture museum in New England, featuring an outdoor sculpture park with many site-specific works. The park contains mostly modern and contemporary works of art. Some of the pieces are meant to be interacted with, and use a variety of mediums—from stacks of newspapers to recycled metal products. Viewers are invited to come within close proximity of the works, creating a personal experience. All the sculptures prohibit walking, standing, or climbing, but you are able to touch them with your hands. The outdoor sculpture field occupies 35 acres of scenic land. A walk around the park is truly surreal. The deCordova provides an incredibly genius artistic presentation of its outdoor collection.

Inside the museum there was an exhibit titled “Rubbers” by artist Martha Friedman. The work is all rubber and focuses on tongues and organic objects. Another exhibit is Leonardo Drew’s “Existed.” This exhibit concentrates on creation, decay, and regeneration. The medium consists primarily of rusted objects. I now know I can always visit the deCordova for inspiration.

  1. The Decordova museum was an interesting trip. There were so many sculptures that I liked, but the two hearts were my favorite. From a distance the sculpture just looks like two black hearts, but when you get up close to it there are all sorts of different objects within it. For example, there was a hammer, a shoe, a hand... and several more objects.

  2. The Decordova museum was my favorite trip so far because we got to interact with these sculptures. Instead of listening to someone talk we could walk around on our own and explore. Seeing all these sculptures have gave me good ideas and now i know i can go here for inspiration. My favorite was the exhibit with all the big rubber bands. I like this one because it was made up of huge rubber bands that I have never seen before and it was a lot of fun to interact with this exhibit.

  3. My favorite trip so far has to be the Decordova Museum. I really enjoyed being outside in a park themed art sculpture exhibit. That is a really neat idea. It was a beautiful day outside too! Sculptures are always extremely fascinating to see because of their size and the time that was put into them. I definitely recommend this museum to anyone.

  4. The Decordova Museum has been by far the best trip we have been on so far. I enjoyed the Decordova trip the best because we could do what we wanted and go do our own thing we did not have to fallow around a tour guide. Also we could interact with the sculptures and touch them and that made it a lot more interesting. I like all of the sculptures I do not think I could just pick out one that I liked the most. A few of my favorites were the two giant hearts with all of the objects in them. From far away you just saw two hears but when you got closer you could see everything inside them, some of the objects i saw in the hearts were shoes, guns, hands and a lot more. Another one of my favorites was the giant rubber bands inside, i liked this one a lot because you could not only touch them but you could walk thought them as well. If i ever get a change i would definitely go back to the Decordova Museum.

  6. The Decordova was a amazing trip I loved being able to be outside and experiencing the art throughout the terrain. I personally liked the hill with stone slabs sticking up and creating bridges over a (not filled at the time) river. I must say it made for a lot of good band CD cover photo shoots!

  7. DeCordave was very interesting. It was nice to see how people created and placed their piece to be "site specific". It was alot of fun to walk around the musuem and look at the artwork, instead of actually walking inside of it. My favorite piece of artwork was the musical pipes. It was cool to just grab a stick and make music by hitting the pipes. It was alot of fun.

  8. DeCordava was my absolute favorite field trip we went on all semester. Even though i been there at least 20 times prior to this trip, there is still stuff i havent seen before since they switch old stuff out and put new stuff in. The DeCordava has a beautiful outside landscape of different kind of artwork that many artists provided for the museum. My favorite well 2 favorite sights were the heart and the garden with the waterfall and the fish ponds. I like the heart because it had purpose and it also had MANY MANY different items in it that were clear to the observer. The fish pond scenery was very peaceful and serene feeling. DeCordava is an EXCELLENT place to bring your family and friends. SO GO AND VISIT IT :)
